Overview

The DFS Namespaces Management Pack monitors servers running Windows Server® 2008, Windows Server 2003 R2, and Windows Server 2003. It can also be configured to monitor the health of DFS Namespaces from client computers running Windows Vista® or Windows® XP.

Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) sites represent segments of the network with local, high speed network connections. Contains Windows-based client computer instances that have the client components of DFS installed and active and use DFS to access shared folders. A DFS namespace enables you to group shared folders that are located on different servers into one or more logically structured namespaces. A DFS namespace consists of a namespace root and the namespace servers that host the root. Below the root are DFS folders (links), which are virtual folders that point to shared folders referred to as folder targets (link targets). A DFS folder (link) is a virtual folder (reparse point) that lies below the namespace root and maps to one or more folder targets (link targets). A folder target is the UNC path of a shared folder or another namespace that is associated with a folder in a namespace. The folder on a namespace server that stores the structure of a namespace. DFS folders are stored as reparse points in the NTFS file system. Namespace servers (root targets) are servers that host a DFS namespace. The DFS Namespaces role service enables you to group shared folders that are located on different servers into one or more logically structured namespaces. Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) maintains all knowledge of domain-based namespaces. The DFS service implements DFS Namespaces functionality on a namespace server. The service is named DFS Namespace on computers running Windows Server 2008, and Distributed File System on computers running Windows Server 2003. It runs under the Local System context. Defines the basic properties of computers running Windows operating systems Contains all instances of DFS Namespaces-related entities.
